Wale dropped Self Promotion last night. It’s pretty hot and shows some evolution in Wale’s style and approach to music. It’s built around doing what’s best for self in the face of insanity. It’s also pretty damn pro-Black, which is what Wale’s been built around for years. That’s nothing new. That doesn’t mean, however, that he doesn’t have anything new to add to the conversation.
“Salary Kaep” samples Colin Kaepernick powerfully and then proceeds to Hamilton the crap out of Kaepernick’s words. I mean that Wale further brings them to life and shows an argument about not wanting to be seen as less than human and/or being murdered in the streets simply because of your skin tone, soldier and otherwise. Is this a great companion piece to Gambino’s “This Is America?” In some ways, yeah, it is. In others, it thankfully stands on its own as a great example of why Wale deserves your ears (even when he makes something as abstract as Shine or shows us all his imperfections in some pretty imperfect ways; I mean, the brother is only human, after all). Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
