The cover combines two photos I had lying around of my mother and me. Astute eyes may notice that I posted these around the time of her death on my IG feed. I felt that these two pictures helped capture what it meant to be Mama Young’s son, to be someone who broke their back to help those around them while still making sure to take time for themselves. Placing a photo of myself when I was a teenager and a kid versus one from, say, her funeral or something, it shows that my mom helped me at those points in life become the man I am today. Plus, showing the switched places of my mother and I shows that, over the years, I became the one who helped her out of a lot of situations just as she did when I was a kid.
With that said, “Withered Leaves” is a track from MYS that, like my mom, deals with a touchy subject: religion and being an uplifting force in your community. It isn’t as easy to do when you’re struggling with wondering if God hears you. However, I know that God does hear me–even if God tells me to get off my butt and make something happen for myself sometimes instead of just waiting for a “blessing” of some sort. So, check it out. If you’re feeling it, be on the lookout for Mama Young’s Son on the 11th of November, and support dope music in all its forms.
