For those expecting another explosive volley from Childish Gambino, his two new tracks, “Summertime Magic” and “Feels Like Summer,” may disappoint. However, if you’re just looking for new Gambino that further explores the R&B side of things over Marvin Gaye-meets-The Weeknd instrumentation while reveling in the summertime and all that contains, you’ll be pleasantly surprised and bob your head to it. There’s deepness in these tracks, as well, but it’s not as pronounced as something like “This Is America.” For me, that’s for the better. We don’t want artists who become one-note, even if that note is revolutionary-inciting. We like those who are comfortable exploring their emotional and vocal range. I think that’s why so many people gravitated towards Drake in the early days.

However, we’re not talking Aubrey here. We’re talking the guy who has sometimes done Drake better than Drake, Childish Gambino.

The “Summer Pack” is slinky, it’s sexy, but it’s not just those things. I know that the internet is going to parse through these tracks (especially if there are videos) and try to decipher hidden meanings that aren’t even real. With that said, enjoy the tracks for what they are. Don’t try to overthink it; just let Gambino’s soulful voice and crooning about the beauties and beasts of summer wash over you.
