COUNTESS Conceptualizes Fujiko Mine in “The Life and Rhymes…”

First of all, I have never been a Lupin the Third superfan. Stick with me, I promise this plays into the song. While I’m not a super fan, I love its impact on anime and the show itself is pretty damn cool. It’s a classic and should be revered as such, even if you’re not the biggest fan of it. It’s like, even though it was geared towards kids, you can’t really knock Astro Boy. That’s because Astro Boy, like Tetsujin 28-go (AKA The Gigantor), helped bring anime to America and elsewhere.

Okay, I’m done. Let’s get into music.

The above anime rant brings us to 24-year-old New Orleans rapper COUNTESS. Her song “The Life and Rhymes of Fujiko Mine” does something similar to Rally 4 Reality’s “Riley.” That is, both songs take animated characters as a concept and seemingly rap from their perspectives as if they were actual people living out their lives in the 2020s. The lyrics are lush and lavish, bouncing around from globetrotting to scheming for that big payday to globetrotting some more. It’s a really interesting track, that’s for sure.

The song is shorter than what I typically post (it clocks in at under two minutes). I made an exception on this one because of its concept and the fact she reminds me of Curren$y. Anyone who reminds me of Spitta always gets, at the least, a listen from me. It’s like how people who remind me of KRIT get a listen. Aside from that, the flow makes you want to ride out and live like a king. If you’re like me and you love your Southern rap that makes you wanna smoke, ride out and chill, you’ll love this one.
