When I first heard this song, I said that it reminded me of “sexy stripper music.” I think it’s like The Weeknd on Trilogy if Weeknd was less dark and coked-out and more Jagged Edge-like. It plays as a traditional love song. It also plays as a “baby come back” song and a babymaker, as well. That, my SOTB Faithful, is something that we need more of when it comes to modern R&B.
I hate sounding like an old man yelling at the clouds. I mean, I’m only 34, but that’s a hill I’d die on. We even have Usher out here singing about “that glu.” My kids’ mom, an Usher fan, was shocked and a bit dumbfounded the song’s meaning. When I explained to her the concept of the song, all she could say was “I was hoping it wasn’t that.” Why that became one of the last conversations we had before becoming “just cordial” versus “friends,” I’ll never understand. God works in many ways, I guess.
Before I get even further off-topic, I love the “raunchy love songs” as much as the sweeter ones. Sometimes, you just need to f*** on someone. But I’m also a product of a woman who was born in 1949, a father in 1920 and ’90s R&B, where things were a bit less on the nose. I like love songs to sound less like “I just wanna hump on you” songs. And yes, I know a lot of my ’90s R&B faves did a fair bit of raunchiness.
While the rap section of the song has rapper Gabriel fearing that the woman he wants back got “ran through,” it’s a pretty damned good love love song. Hell, even that element is sweet, in an awkward way. If you want someone, you hope they want you back. And if you only want them, you’d probably hope they feel the same and don’t go through a ho phase/hope you don’t go through a ho phase. You don’t want them to forget about you and leave, even though you’re the one who messed up. It’s got some elements of “Jodeci begging” as well, so I’m here for that as I’m an 80s/90s baby. If you mess up, sometimes you’ve gotta swallow your pride and say “wait, don’t go.” Because of the elements described above, I feel this track is less “I need to hump on you” and more “I need you to come back to me and stay with me.”
