Egyptian American rapper Mostafa has been featured on SOTB over the last year or two. One thing I loved about his music, aside from the fact that this man can rap his a** off, is that he always blends his real-life experiences into his bars. All of them, the good and the bad ones. In the visuals to his recently-released song “Butter الزبدة,” Mostafa blends Arabic and English and Cairo with the US to present a story about himself. The globetrotting rapper has taken up residence in Cairo, Egypt and has almost instantly felt at peace with himself and the situations around him. I totally get that as, on a much much smaller scale, I actually feel at home in Baltimore; I “just reside” almost anywhere else.
Back to “Butter الزبدة,” I love the bilingual nature of the song as it helps Mostafa “reconnect with his roots” while also sharing who he is to the listener/viewer. I am appreciative that Mostafa included me in the list a people to speak on his music (and personal) journey. He’s here, he’s celebratory of his roots and he’s not going anywhere. His essence and heart are in Cairo and its said that “home is where the heart is.” Check out the song below and do our favorite thing: support dope music in all its forms.
