Intimacy, physically and otherwise, is one of those things that can be refreshing, revitalizing and invigorating for those who participate in it. It can also be a thing that triggers or scares the living hell out of you if you’ve been through something. Most of us, at one point or another, have been guarded against getting too close to a person. Maybe it’s that there’s a fear that they may not like us if we lay ourselves bare in front of them. Maybe it’s because we’ve been hurt by people. Heck, maybe it’s just that we’ve seen a bunch of toxic examples of “love” and/or “intimacy” and we just don’t want to go down any roads pertaining to the topic at hand.
On her song “Intimacy,” singer/songwriter Skye Houston blends a fusion of dancehall, pop and afrobeats to discuss this idea of “I want to get close. I want them to get close to me. However, it seems like we’re both afraid of the whole thing. Houston skips around the subject until the song pretty much allows her to be free of restrictions and try to become intimate with the person she’s talking to.
However, she also acknowledges that the other person may lose out. If they drag their feet too long, they will become a person Skye doesn’t want to engage with. While she pines for the type of intimacy that “leaves [her] wide awake [while her] body shakes,” she’s also not going to settle. This is an anthem, one for those who are learning to love themselves and lover others.
