“InspirationMusic” is a bit shorter than what I usually focus. That’s because it clocks in at barely over two minutes. That said, this one was too intriguing to pass up. Anyone who mixes House, Club Music, conscious hip-hop and nerd rap into a song about the pressures they face as a queer person and a discussion on self-presented pressures? Yeah, they definitely get my ear.
From the driving beat to the Chun-Li sample placed throughout the track to the lo-fi-esque lyrics? This one is one of those songs that’ll grab your attention with its brazenness and uniqueness and keeps you because it’s an honest “I just looked in the mirror” sort of song. As a queer person, it seems that creighton sometimes struggles with that desire to inspire like-minded people to live their truths and/or just make good music. I just came out and I struggled with adjusting a little bit. It’s not because people are dismissive of it. Mostly everyone was like “okay cool. You’re still Speed,” which I appreciate (and that’s honestly how it should be). However, that adjustment is more like me trying to figure out “how do I fit all of me into a box?”
The honest answer, one that I came to and one creighton discusses a bit in this song, is that you don’t fit into a box, nor should you even try. You’ll just set yourself up for failure and unnecessary stress. Be you, regardless of your race, gender, orientation, etc. Live your truth and you’ll end up being inspirational in some way. At least that’s what I took away from this one. Check it out (and its parent project) above and support dope music in all its forms.
