Nashville-based band The It City hit my line a while back with their funky jam, “Give Me That Sunshine.” SOTB Faithful, the song has that feelgood energy about it that you can’t help but smile from. That is something that I find commendable in music these days. The song itself brings to mind, for me, funk jam bands mixed with folks who’re having fun and have a lot of experience (each member of the group has an incredibly-long resume). I love how the horn section starts off the track (I didn’t tell them I’m a sucker for some dope-ass brass; who told them my secret?) and then it just jumps into the ride. It doesn’t take time setting the mood or anything. You’re just smacked in the face from the jump with funky rhythms.
And that is something I’m always here for.
As a child of a woman born in the late 1940s, it takes me back to the cookouts my mom and the fam would have. The air was sticky, but funk, soul and R&B always managed to chill things down. It’s like a bit of soul food for my ears. Plus, it touches my soul because of my connection to the genres. The It City’s style had me humming the hook for a few days. Sorry y’all. I kept this one to myself for a little too long.
I’ll try to be better about getting these out the door, but remember: I’m usually a one-man band (with many assists from Valentino, Planet, and Solomon when it’s crunch time). That said, I may be slow getting a post out. That’s because, apparently, people love my reviews via SH (and elsewhere). That makes a brother feel like I just got that sunshine myself. Yes, I’m feeling myself today. But before y’all write me off as cocky, check out “Give Me That Sunshine” below and support dope music in all its forms.
