Walkup music is one of those things in baseball that you’ve got to have an ear for. You’ve got to know which song’ll say “hey I’m HIM and I’m about to take your fastball down the heart of the plate for a MFin’ ride, my guy.” You’ve got to have that one song that’ll strike fear into batters all over the league(s). Essentially, you need some music that’ll let the crowd know that, once again, you are HIM.
Enter Tre Houston and TheyCallMeSolo on “I’m Here,” a booming track that was written as Mookie Betts’ new walkup music. The song is damned good. It’s a bit surprising to hear Tre on a track with some four-letter words, as the last few songs of his I’ve heard have been pretty clean. That said, there is a clean version available as well if you’re rocking with the vibe here and want to be able to keep it PG (versus hard PG-13).
There’s also a “Mookie Version” of the song, exclusively for use by the Dodgers wunderkind. Again, either version is definitely one of those “I’m HIM and I’m here to kick ass and chew bubble gum…and I’m out of bubblegum” sorts of songs. I love the swagger here, as it’s like that booming “I’ma let my [grapefruits] hang” sort of hip-hop that you’d get from the South or Midwest. I also appreciate that, even as a sports-centric sort of track, it doesn’t play cheese with its metaphors and punchlines. Thank y’all for that, Tre and Solo. Now, if you’re interested, do the thing. The Mookie version is below, saying “play me, dammit!” So play it and support dope music in all its forms.
Also, let’s go Orioles! Sorry not sorry.
