Toxic relationships aren’t just cut and dry “they’re evil, I’m a victim.” Instead, in the 2020s, toxic relationships can suck you in with promises of “I’ll be better,” only for the other party (or even yourself) to do the same ol’ song and dance they did the last time. Irish duo Odd Numbers (our producer) and Wallfella (our rapper/singer) give us a lot to chew on with this one.
Sonically, it’s one of this reminds me of a mix between J. Cole when he’s on his “let me think about my life and those around me and see what’s what” tip and Mac Miller. It’s conscious and conscious of the fact that Fella keeps finding himself back in the same predicament until he finally says “enough is enough.” However, by then? He’s already too jaded, too cynical to trust someone again if they were to utter the words “I love you” to him. It’s not a family-friendly song, so don’t get swayed in by the melodic nature of it, kids. This one gets down and dirty about toxic relationships, the back and forths that occur when hurt people hurt people and that moment where you either say “it is what it is” and you keep it moving–or you keep it moving after you tell the other person to kick rocks and such.
Unfortunately, for Fella, the song ends with that indifference. It’s a sad ending, but it’s one that’s all too familiar. Not me personally–and no, not even that situation. However, I have seen relationships end up hell on earth then “eff it. I’m done,” no one talks to the other ever again and both are scarred mentally and emotionally because of it.
I feel like he made this one to be a cautionary tale. I think he’s saying “hey, listeners. If my story sounds like something you’re going through, leave. Yes, it’s easier said than done, but it needs to happen.” That’s my interpretation of “LMHM.” Check out the song above and support dope music in all its forms.
