Vexed the Barber is an artist who’s got a firm grasp on what he wants to do, musically and thematically, with his music. He also has talent to the point he actively receives blessings in the form of verses from some pretty well-known artists. “Heathens” is no exception, as the track receives a verse from YeloHill to close things out. Overall, here’s what we get on “Heathens”: we get a song that’s chill and smoke session-friendly, production-wise. However, when the lyrics kick in, you’re given a deeper dissertation and discussion on religion, inner demons, family and his life and the wars he faces outside of all of the aforementioned.

It is, quite literally, the definition of “real hip-hop.” That’s not because of its sound. You can have boombap drums and inventive beats and still sound like a complete jackass (in a bad way). It’s more because of its honesty. Vexed somewhat admits to keeping some of these demons around him for “fuel” to keep going. And then, on top of all that, we can also say the beat’s nice AF.

Going back to the sound, I really love the jazzy instrumental here. It lends itself well to the mood Vexed sets. It’s moody and contemplative, just like the song. Again, “Heathens” is an emotional ride through life and questioning one’s faith–in God and in man. The Jacksonville, Florida native is a regular guy with regular problems and regular ways to elevate and solve his problems. He’s not speaking in riddles, nor is he dulling/censoring his sharp tongue.
