Two things happened between me first receiving this submission and today. First, I was away from SOTB for about a week or two Why? Simply put, kids are a blessing and, if you have them, spend as much time with them as you possibly can–because they do grow up. But because I was away, I missed a lot of submissions. Like, a lot. My bad, y’all. The second thing that happened is that I somehow have stumbled on about 70 renditions of Flyana Boss running through random places spitting bars from today’s feature “You Wish.” Okay, maybe not 70. But, the number’s high–and that’s a great thing because the song is bouncy and free AF.

“You Wish” is Flyana Boss doing what they do best: making catchy-yet-real-AF songs about their experiences as women, recording artists and humans while tearing down the patriarchy in their own way. I mean, any song that has the lines “Hello Christ? I’m bout to sin again/Said I loved you to that man, but I’m not feelin’ him” is a helluva way to get people into your song (even if it’s a teensy bit “blasphemous”).

It’s an even better line when you think about what they’re saying.

People often get those “butterflies” and think it’s love, then they come along something/someone else that makes them question the whole thing. That feeling is often seen as “part of the process” for men. However, having a woman speaking on this concept and applying it to their search for “the one” (if “they “the one” even exists for most people)? It’s refreshing to hear, because it reminds people that love isn’t a binary thing–nor is the “f***ing ’round and finding out” phase just for men. Hell, everyone is allowed to say “eh, I’m not really feeling this anymore.”

It’s also refreshing to hear a song that’s fun, empowering and doesn’t devolve into random shouting about gunplay. I’ll take 100,000 songs like this, willingly and with open arms, before I take one with a bunch of “aim for the head”-type tracks. If you can’t tell, I’m tired of all the guns and opps in every song.
