Sedric Perry Presents “It Girl”

Okay, so, as many of you know (at least the ones who see me on IG/Facebook), I came out as pansexual a few weeks back. I’m still learning the ropes, though I was never a guy who called folks “the OTHER f-word” or anything. But, as a newly out pan man, I hope I can say this without sounding weird or, you know, ignorant. I just got a track from singer/songwrite Sedric Perry, the aptly-titled “It Girl.” What makes this one stand out, for me, is that “It Girl” is queer as hell. But, it’s that out and proud queerness that makes it work.

A summer anthem for the hot girls of all types, shapes, orientations and races, from the girls to the gurls to the gworls, “It Girl” plays like if Prince made a baby with Freddie Mercury, that baby became an adult in the 80s, maybe did a line or two and decided to do their own version of Flashdance and everything else distinctly ’80s. It’s a bouncy song with visuals that are high on eyecandy. Said eyecandy should appeal to gay folx (lots of beefcake), queer folx (there’s a cavalcade of every orientation), and, hell, even the “straight straight” folks (because, you know, there are a few moments of bouncing tig ol’ biddies).

But the eye candy isn’t the only reason why this one should be given a watch.

The song is a bop and it’s worth a spin, even if you’re straight like an en dash. Perry’s vocals are a thing of beauty. As I said, they remind me of Prince and Freddie Mercury. On top of that, the production is light and airy and it just feels like summer. That’s probably the best way to describe this one: it’s a summer song that feels like summer. Sometimes, I wish I was alive in the 80s. But then, I think about how much coke was flowing freely in the world at that time and I’m like “no, thanks.” Check out the out, proud and 80s-centric visuals below and support dope music in all its forms.
