Dan Whitlam Speaks on a Breakup on “Juliette”

It takes a lot to admit you f***ed up in a dissolution of a relationship, romantic or otherwise. I’ve had to take a good hard look in the mirror over the last few years with some of my situations and say “damn Speed, you could’ve been better here.” Hell, with a certain Shawty, I went way overboard and got into some ish. Now we don’t talk all that much. It be like that sometimes. That said, every L in life can be turned into a win. That’s because they make you reflect, reevaluate and grow–and not make the same mistake twice (or thrice in some cases).

On “Juliette,” UK-born artist Dan Whitlam matter-of-factly discusses a breakup that was entirely his fault (I’ve been there) because he “stopped trying [and] stopped being the person he was when [his ex] met him.” It’s one of those “damn, I really effed up and now I’ll have to live with the fact I did you wrong forever” sorts of songs. Like Jay-Z’s classic “Song Cry,” the song is very emotional and strips down any sort of bravado and such, leaving us with a man who sees the error of his ways. However, in both situations, our leading gentlemen saw things too late. I really enjoyed the stripped down instrumental, as it’s not too over-the-top nor too minimalistic. The production will potentially lead listeners to take each bar and poem to heart, realize that they’ve effed up along the way with a situation and try to either rectify their loss or grow from the experience.
