Benji Brown Says “Goodbye” to an Old Love

It’s said that hindsight is 20/20. It’s also said that good things come to those who wait. As cliched as that phrase is, it applies well with Benji Brown’s “Goodbye” as it’s the first song he’s put out in about two years. The introspective cut features the UK-born singer/songwriter delving into the dissolution of a relationship he once held dear. Unlike some situations, the dissolution was more of a slow burn, as things started going south and never recovered. Sure, there are still great moments that arose from the situation. However, everything has served its purpose and, well, Brown’s ready to make the “easiest decision…to say goodbye” versus trying to cling to the past. A theme like this takes a real “here’s a mirror to my soul” sort of approach, as it easily could’ve gone a few other ways–none of which are really that conducive to growth and maturation.

The 24-year-old Londoner-by-way-of-Northampton singer/songwriter has a wisdom to his lyrics that allows the song to be sweet but also cut deep. It has a Weeknd sort of feel to it, sonically speaking. “Goodbye” is the type of song that will get you, even if you’re not going through heartbreak on your own. For example, it made me think of times where things weren’t as sunny and I also made the choice to leave. Leaving and moving on isn’t as easy as people make it out to be, even if you think it’s the right thing to do. Brown’s vocals and lyrics bring a lens to this and show that the easiest move to make can sometimes be the greatest one to make. If you need another reason to check this one out, know that Benji is VV Brown’s brother. For those unware, VV Brown is an artist who has also made a great impression on the SOTB site with her honest lyrics and beautiful voice.
