This song is an homage to the 1990s (including the eponymous cartoons that’d run from eight in the morning until noon) and how they helped add to many a Millennial’s childhood. On the flip side, “Saturday Morning Cartoons” is also a warning for sucker MCs and sucker people who do others foul: “Don’t do foul sh*t in real life or wackness on the mic.” Therefore, it’s one of those track that showcases duality gives me exactly what I like from my hip-hop.
Lyrically, the amount of wordplay exhibited here is pretty damned great. Sonically, the song is catchy but also weighted with a method behind the madness. Flow-wise, each of the artists here give us something different on each section of the song as no one sounds the same. I’m also a sucker for the way the beat pitches down on the third verse, giving it a darker air than the first two.
If you need some gritty-sounding 90s hip-hop with 2020s messages, I recommend that you do the SOTB thing below. Check it out, support dope music in all its forms and then check out what else the artists have to offer. I’m sure you’ll find something you like–especially since ELJAY has featured on SOTB a few times in the past (so this is something of a sonic reunion).
