What happens when you mix boombap, jazz, lyrically-deep Southern hip-hop and shoegaze? I never thought of this combination–only because it never crossed my mind. However, if that collection of sounds is anything like the song of the hour, “GDP,” sign me up. That’s because the whole thing is just awesome and something I’d love to hear more of.
Instrumented by Krohme (a veteran Virginia producer) and UK-based shoegaze band Blind Orbits, “GDP” features T-Mo Goodie and MC Mogly on the bar side of things. I absolutely love the energy everyone gives here, as it ends up being conscious but also quite booming and trunk-rattling. Considered an “experience,” “GDP” is one of those songs that will make you vibe, think and smile–all at once. It’s jazzy, it’s rock-adjacent, it’s lyrical as hell. In short, it brings to mind many of the great Southern artists over the years, such as Three 6 Mafia, OutKast, Goodie Mob, 8Ball & MJG and others. It also makes me think of newer artists, like Big KRIT, who take the crunchiness of older Southern rap and recontextualize it to create songs equal parts homage and offshoot.
If you want a modern (and curse-free, might I add) hip-hop track that’ll make you think about ATCQ and UGK all at once, this one’s for you. Check it out below and support dope music in all its forms.
