It’s a new month, which means I’ve got a HEALTHY helping of posts to get through after taking most of the last two months off. Sometimes, I’ve got to take inventory of non-SOTB-related things and life sometimes takes priority over me being a supporter of dope music.
Nevertheless, I’ve got a good deal of good music to talk about. The first of these sorts of songs comes from Paytra, a multiethnic singer/songwriter who doesn’t sound exactly like anyone else. She’s got a unique-but-familiar vibe to her, which helps her music stand out, especially with a bombastic track such as “You Got the Sauce.”
This one has a lot of old-school qualities to it. For those that listen, you’ll be transported to a decade or so ago (in a fresh and good way, that is). This is because Paytra takes her vocals and wit (which both remind me a lot of a Joss Stone type), mixes in some 2020s mood boosters and lays it out for the audience to come together to and proclaim their own awesomeness. At least, that’s the vibe I get from the song. Released a bit ago, the song’s vocals blend excellently with the instrumental, as the whole thing really feels like something I would’ve peeped in high school. It’s a very positive track, one that doesn’t go overboard or feels cheap.
I think I love the instrumentation the most. That’s not saying I didn’t love the rest of the song; I did, as it’s hard not to rock with a song like this. However, the 2010s pop-meets-2000s R&B vibe of the backing tracks give this one an edge. That edge is then blended with sweet and funky guitar licks and booming drums. Put it all together and you’ve got a hit on your hands. It’s anthemic in its approach, one that promotes being the best you you can be. This, of course, helps bolster the lyrics, which give thanks for all the things that make me and you the people who we are. The song was described as being an “electrifying blend of sound and meaning.” One listen to this positive song and you’ll, well, realize you’ve got the sauce and are the boss who paid the cost(s). In a world where “HIMs” and “HERs” are running rampant, remember that no one can stop you from being “HIM” or “HER.” That said, first and foremost, you’re “YOU” and there’s no one who can do you like you can. Even if they claim to be on your level, your sauce is one that can’t be replicated–just like human nature.
