Want your rock-rap with a heavy dose of lyricism, boombap and gruffness? Did you grow up on early-to-mid 2000s hip-hop, specifically samples that aren’t as recognizable but still bang? If you answered “yes” to either of those questions, you definitely need “Our Kind of Rap” in your earholes. Released as part of Tony’s recently-released album Time Flies, “Kind” gives listeners a heap of old-school flows and wordplay. Those two things, they all combine to create a posse cut that speaks on where the game’s gone over the years and where it could go. It’s equally “pro-lyrics, anti-wackness” and a proclamation that hip-hop is for the people–even as it’s becoming even more popular.
Sonically, the rock-rap-like beat has a Dipset/mid-2000s NYC hip-hop sort of feel to it. The vibes, for me, feel right at home in the ’90s, the 2000s and right now. I think it’s also due to the fact that many samples from Time Flies come from progressive rock songs and albums. Those energies and melodies are, to me, damn near timeless. Hell, I still play Cam and Juelz like they just dropped because the beats always give you the screwface. That should tell you all you need to know about this one. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
