Love and life are great, amazing even. However, every so often, even the strongest of us all will want a break from the day-to-day. In the romantic side of things, that desire for a break can stem from many things. In “tired,” Amira B’s melancholy is caused by a partner who isn’t giving their all, bringing Amira down with them in the process. Said partner is one of those folks who you may fall for, realize the wackness, then somehow fall again (against your better judgement). In other words, Amira realizes that her situation is toxic for her soul and is voicing her concerns about the whole thing. What we end up getting is a slow burner about loves that shouldn’t be and what one does after they make that realization.
Sonically, Amira advised that I view this as “inspired by D’Angelo’s classic Voodoo album.” That is an apt comparison. This is considering D’Angelo’s album being about a love that, at times, goes against the narrator’s logic. Plus, the subdued neo-soul with minimalist production helps listeners hone in on Amira’s voice and her frustration in the whole scenario. Even outside of D’Angelo, “tired” is a song that stems from that mid-1990s to early-2000s neo-soul pocket and pays homage to its forerunners.
