MacArthur Maze Present the Throwback-Heavy “Blvck Saturdays”

Over a gritty beat, Bay Area collective MacArthur Maze give us bars on top of bars on “Blvck Saturdays.” It feels the most like a 2010s posse cut, potentially from A$AP Mob or OF (not that OF; the one that spawned Tyler). Lyrically, the three artists who rap on this one (Champ Green, D. Bledsoe and Black Achilles) rip the beat to shreds.

How, you ask? The group gives us thoughts about the world, what it means to be Black in the 2020s, smoke sessions and a bevy of other conversation starters. I love how the beat (produced by collective member D Sharp) feels crunchy and gritty, but also a bit out there (in a good way). Specifically, the way that the vocal sample warbles in and out makes you take notice of the bars. It draws attention to some of the most-poignant lyrics within a song full of them.

The visuals (shot by Adam KG and Blinktöne) are a mix between a great trip and ’90s rap video with some of the B&W imagery. That encapsulates each verse quite well. Overall, this song and its accompanying visuals will grab listeners and make them take notice of this collective and what they’re putting down. “Saturdays” appears on the group’s Blvck Saturday (Bandcamp link below).
