Eric Jaye’s “Electric Kool-Aid” reminds me of a mix between Pharrell’s vocals and MJ’s “Can’t Help It” in its phrasing and elements of its instrumentation. To sum it up, it’s a breezy, sexy, tasty and sonically-pleasing jam meant for love and/or getting some loving. The Virginia native’s eclectic background comes into play as we hear a variety of sounds converge to create a smorgasbord of emotion. The drums give the track a distinct “[stuff] and chill” neo-soul vibe, the falsetto vocals give Marvin Gaye as well as the aforementioned Pharrell, and everything else? A figurative cherry on top of a stellar song. What makes the track stand out even more, for me, is that Jaye had his hands all in the whole song.
Every. Single. Element.
From the mix to the instruments to the pen, we see what happens when DIY artists get the backing of major eyes. And as Jaye’s been referred to as one of Snoop Dogg’s favorite musicians, that’s an apt assertion. Before I go off on a tangent about how the mainstream needs the indies to flourish, just know that you can definitely play this one later tonight (if you catch my drift). Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms. I’m definitely intrigued by this new (to me) artist and look forward to what Jaye has coming down the pipe.
