The song “Flying High” is a mix between conscious boombap and a driving drumline that feels alive and its own monster. I liked the track when first presented, featuring it on a Quickies playlist. Now that the visuals are out, I’m still here for the track. Lyrically, our two statesmen give us positivity and celebratory grown man joy-centric bars. Nothing’s elder about the OGs in the rap game, as age is a social construct. That’s especially true when you consider that many “older” artists still hold their own against (and sometimes even outrap) the new school.
What I love about “this one “Flying” is this: it takes newer sensibilities, has fun with its bars and message, and manages to be a bop all the same. I also am a fan of the visuals. They’re not basic, nor are they outlandish. They fit perfectly with the vibe of the lyrics. Plus, they’re pretty dang sleek.
