Ridge Long Tells His Story on the Big23-Featuring “Yeah Yeah”

Maryland-based artist Ridge Long returns to SOTB with a track that’s a bit outside of my typical wheelhouse. I say that because “Yeah Yeah” is a melodic rap track which features Long and Big23 harmonizing about the trials they’ve been through and how they’ll never fold on their day ones. Conceptually, it’s a track that’s been done a bit. However, what makes this one stand out to me is the artistry and the story behind it all.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my earheart for Ridge Long’s tracks. The brother is an amazing artist who has legitimately been through things most artists, much less people in general, haven’t. From addiction to jail to crafting his own redemption, we’re bearing witness to his story with each track. Those dark moments help color Long’s outlook on life. However, they also make him thankful that he’s still here and breathing. He doesn’t waste a word on his songs, be they boombap-esque or more trap-influenced. The same thing can be said about this track, as we’re given great quotable lyrics, a vibe one can smoke and chill with, and a hook that’s incredibly catchy. As sonically mainstream as the song is, the overall vibe has the grit of a more-underground track.
