I have a few loose rules when it comes to the music I cover. 90% of the time, I skip drill. 60% of the time, I pass on a song because it sounds too alt-rocky. I give all songs a fair listen and playlists aren’t a demotion. I also have a rule that states that “songs for a fallen comrade will, if they speak to my soul, always get posted.”
Power of Thought’s “Our Last Jam,” featuring late friend Bradley Bogus Holbrook, touched my soul as I listened to it. Created using archival recordings of Holbrook’s vocals and acoustic guitar, “Jam” lets listeners know why Bradley was so special and important to him. The song also may make listeners feel as if they’ve seen the friendship unfold right in front of them. The track starts off on a braggy boombap tip. Then, as the song progresses, the guitar comes in and Thought speaks from the heart. I also love the visuals, which show Power in a tranquil setting, reminiscing about his friend.
