Apologies for the use of ain’t; I just wanted a cool title to match the coolness and self-esteem booster that is “No Sugar.” The song, written and sang by Poland-born singer/songwriter Helaine Vis, takes its title and content from a Polish phrase (one that also feels quite right at home in Black houses as well). Throughout “Sugar,” Vis keeps going even when things get hard. That’s because she’s not made of mush and can withstand quite a lot. After all, we’re not made of sugar. We won’t/can’t melt that easily (see what I mean about it feeling right at home in Black houses?) nor should we. Humans are resilient lifeforms, especially considering some of the crap the world shovels our way. That positivity and “I won’t fall” energy helps Vis live up to her name (as “vis” is Latin for “strength”).
If you’re the type of person who isn’t deterred by negativity and knows that you’re a special being, this one’s for you. If you haven’t stepped into your greatness, maybe give this one a listen and take a shot at it. Check out the visuals below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
