Lola Coker’s “unreliable” finds the singer/songwriter speaking about a childhood friend who recently passed. The song, which sonically has cues from Lianne La Havas and Erykah Badu, finds Coker wondering about what could’ve been. However, “unreiable” also finds Coker admitting that time often makes (and made) it a bit less possible to connect with everyone. I feel this one in the pit of my soul, because I’ve had several childhood friends pass on that I found out about through fourth-hand sources. In some cases, that includes social media posts. It stings, even when you try to remember the good times and remember that, sometimes, people just drift apart. Conceptually, it’s a sadder song, one that finds Lola singing about her regret for not being as present, but also thankfulness for the time she did have with her friend.
