A boombap track produced by and featuring Rich Hippie, “Lost in the Wood” is what some’d consider to be “real hip-hop.” Soul samples, booming bass, simple-but-effective snares–along with lyrics about the world and maturation–run wild throughout this one. I really enjoyed the beat here, as it reminds me of some RZA and early Kanye. As y’all know, as a Millennial, I’ve been all but predisposed to love chipmunk soul flips.
Of course, I also like them when the bars match the beat–which is something RH and Sanchez do here. I love the lyrics, which tell the story of two artists putting their best feet forward to craft timeless music. It also helps that the bars also tell us why we should give Rich a listen (without actually saying “gimme a listen. I spit fire”). He opens up slowly but surely about his upbringing, those who surround him and who he wants to become.
And while his flow and bars are dope, his ear for beats is even better. He and Sanchez just float over this dreamy boombap beat. It has a real DITC feel to it. Rich Hippie may be another “complete package” sort of artist, considering he raps as well as he makes beats–and vice versa. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
