Sometimes, you need a reminder that there will always be light in the dark. You’ve always got to remember that you are awesome and powerful, even when things seem dire. Moorea Masa & the Mood’s latest, “Magic,” speaks on this idea while also being a love song to the queer community. Conceptually, the track is a slow burner that allows for Masa to sing her heart out about keeping on. The instrumentation is a bit minimalistic, which allows listeners to focus in on Masa’s vocals and songwriting abilities. The hook reminds listeners that they are beautiful and incredible, continuously giving the audience positive reinforcement as needed.
“Magic” also showcases Moorea’s diversity, both as an artist and in regards to her background. The Portland-raised Italian-African-American has studied various forms of music. Those forms, from neo-soul to a bit of alt-pop to conscious R&B, give the song more flavor and nuance. In other words, it doesn’t come off lecture-like or over-the-top in terms of its positivity. It’s just right. Check out the track above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
