Jim Swim Channels Mac Miller on “Into the Blue”

Jim Swim’s “Into the Blue,” reminiscent of Mac Miller’s Circles project, was mentioned to be a “sad song that was a joy to make.” It’s very melancholy in its approach to discussing what it’s like to be at your wit’s end and have a need to run away to a more calming place. While the song reminds me of those last few waves you get on a beach before you go into your hotel for the night, you can absolutely feel the pleasure Swim, Alyx Rush and Dan Padley must’ve felt while recording it. I think that’s because, while it’s a calm-but-melancholy song, the lyrics are soothing, even in their sadness.

Swim’s bars here also remind me of Mac, which is great as that’s what he went for. The rhyme schemes are complex but the lyrics themselves are simpler. The easily-digestible lyrics provide a fresh take on an often-discussed topic (dealing with one’s mental health and needs while trying to keep pushing on your day-to-day). I am absolutely in love with the vocals, as they’re serene and dreamy as they tell you to float on and push on past the darkness. Introspection is one of Swim’s strengths and, as expected, we get a complex view into Swim’s mental. Overall, it’s one of those tracks that you appreciate for its candid nature–and its lyrical content.

From a personal standpoint, I always appreciate songs that tell me to keep pushing, even when things feel tough. From a fan standpoint, I’m glad to get new music from Jim. I’m excited to see where things go for his sound in 2024. If this is any indication, he’s picking up right where he left off.
