If you’ve never heard of Jim Swim, you’re doing yourself a disservice. The rapper/producer/songwriter seems to be cut from the same outline as Mac Miller and others who blended jazz, rap and even a bit of R&B to make their points hit that much harder. I have two tracks from Jim in my collection of songs I need to cover, one from this week (which was already written about) and one from late-2023. Without any further ado, let’s talk about the earlier-released “Open,”
Featuring Avery Moss, “Open” finds Swim and Moss being, well, open and free. The song is an “ode to moments of freedom” that also talks about the hindrances we experience to our freedom(s). It’s one of those sorts of tracks that’ll make you say “he just like me fr” and empathize with Swim’s multilayered lyrics about trying to enjoy what we can—even if the mortal world sometimes throws us curveballs. I love the synthy nature of the production, as it makes the track feel a bit more ethereal. If you like Jim Swim (and/or trust my musical gut), check out the song below and support dope music in all its forms.
