Released at the tail-end of 2023, “HALF” is a simple song with a powerful message. As it’s a song about leaving a toxic relationship/environment, I’m here for the story and the lyrics. However, I’m more so also here for the positivity that comes with leaving something not good for you. I’ve been in toxic situations over the years. Hell, I’ve been toxic a few times over the years. What makes me different from someone who isn’t self-aware is that I can learn from my mistakes and improve myself and my tendencies. Some folks just can’t do that and it sucks. That said, it’s also par for the course when it comes to humanity. Before I wax poetic, let’s get back to “HALF.”
jonnychang never misses with his tracks; he always hit his mark, sonically and conceptually. The brother is a genius when it comes to, for example, his visuals or wordplay. Featuring Dom V, “HALF” is not the exception to the rule. It also slaps and snipes at its target from across the map. The bars are full of emotions as well as the flows exhibited. Additionally, the production is melancholic without being overly dramatic. It’s boombap-esque without falling into the trappings of making an emotional song too boombappy. In other words, “making it feel a bit more preachy than intended)”HALF” doesn’t come off preachy but still comes off honest. On top of all of that, you get a duo who’s ready to better their situation and, by proxy, themselves. I won’t spoil too much else about the track except this: listen and listen now.
