Lex Ether and Speek Wyslee Present “Special”

Life is beautiful, even when it’s struggle-filled. After all, nothing good comes easy. I’m living proof of that (and proof that God helps those who help themselves). That said, you sometimes need to be reminded that “hey, you’re not alone.” It’s partly the reason why I’ve done music this long. How that ties into this track is simple. Lex and Speek set out to make music for the struggle. We often will go through trials and tribulations, but we can–and will–overcome any obstacle. From a sonic standpoint, the track reminds me of a mix between Cole and KRIT with a dash of Pac. It’s bar-heavy, but still incredibly poetic when it comes down to it. It’s conscious without beating its audience over the head with its message. I think that’s what makes “Special” work. Well, that and the idea that sometimes we need that affirmation to be repeated.

This track made me–besides wake up, get up and get out there–want to continue pushing on. For that, I’m very grateful (even if I’ve slacked on my SOTB posting). The last few months have been a series of large-scale transitions. It’s been rough and, admittedly, I wasn’t as present as SOTB as I would’ve liked. Hell, I wasn’t as present just as regular ol’ me. However, I’m still standing here with my head to the sky. God doesn’t make trash, so you’re already favored and unique. The song itself also reminds me a bit of Little Brother in its approach to the subject matter. Overall, it’s a cut that’ll make you feel good about your situation and flourish regardless where you stand. At least, that’s what the song is for me.
