Sorg and Napoleon Maddox Present “If You”

Like 29192 from earlier today, Sorg and Napoleon Maddox have made music together for a while. As a duo, they’ve been at it the last 10+ years. While I’m not as familiar as I’d like to be with either part of the collaborative effort, I know good music when I hear it. Well, 95% of the time. Sometimes, I’ll unironically like a song that sounds like poowater compared to what I usually listen to. Sometimes, you need a little “Fart” in your life amongst all the conscious rap. That said, “If You” is not poowater. At all. Instead, it’s a refreshing blast of humanity played out over the course of the track.

The US/France residing duo (Sorg’s from Besançon, France and Maddox is from Cincy) waste no time letting us know what they’re here to make you hear. The track overflows with positive energies and a lot of can-do. I’m here for this, because (as I’ve said a few times already today), I love positive music. I especially love it when, like “If You,” it’s lyrically sound as well as positivity-exuding. Overall, this is one of those songs you should check out because it’ll make you feel good about humanity–while also realizing that we can all stand to be a bit more empathetic.

As someone who grew up in Baltimore (even as someone who wasn’t out in the streets all my life), I had a bit of a me or nothing mindset as a youth. I had to. My mom struggled and the guy I called my father (don’t ask) wasn’t really that present in my life. When he was, there were always weird vibes, if you catch my drift. I learned to start caring about my fellow humans in middle school, by choice and force. I wasn’t the most apt preteen when it came to preteen things. I was one of those “I grew up early” types. I say all that to say I wish I had a song like this growing up. Maybe J dot Speed would’ve been less of an a-hole to everyone else–even if they didn’t fully understand me.

Getting back to the song, if you want something that’ll make you say “we gon’ make it” while also making you care about the world around you, you’ll love this one. If you like your bars poignant and inspirational, this one’s especially for you. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
