Happy MFing Valentine’s Day. Today is the perfect Valen-time to cuddle up, snuggle, maybe turn some spooning into forking and forget about your side piece–until tomorrow, at least when it’s their day.
Jokes aside, as much as I clown the day (I say “love your lovers 24/7/365/to infinity and back”), I still love love. Hell, one of my biggest songs of my music “career” is “Stay with Me,” a love song of sorts about The Shawty. Because of that love of love, I enjoy when people sing about getting that ol’ flame back to make these moments once again comfort. Case in point, Decatur-born artist 4Fargo dropped a remix of his smash song “She’ll Be Okay” last week with Jacquees. Sonically, it’s a bop, plain and simple. Just in time for that night of “baby I’m beggin’, baby I’m beggin’, beggin’ baby,” the duo craft a song that just works–and works well. Its strength lies in its ability to blend that old-school I’m down on one knee, begging you please energy with a healthy dose of 2020s R&B sensibility.
In other words, Fargo and Jacquees know they could go somewhere else and get someone to love (them). However, there’s nothing like the real thing, baby–especially when the love and affection is mutual. I really enjoyed this one because of the vocals. Fargo, the young Georgia-based multihyphenate, has a very strong voice. It’s mainstream-friendly but rich in a way that you don’t often get from modern R&B. It matches perfectly here to blend with Jacquees’ sound. This ain’t just the same ol’ song with a different rhythm. These brothers stand up here and straight-up say quit playing games with my heart because we belong together–even if only for one night.
I love that these artists are just real about what they want. I also love that Jacquees has grown as an artist, adding more fire to his claims of being one of the best R&B minds out right now.
