With production that brings to mind artists like Dilla and Madlib, Potatohead People bring us a jazz-rap-like/Rhodes-heavy track for Redman to skate on. And skate, he definitely does. Now, full disclosure, I’m a guy who thinks artists like Redman and Method Man sound good on just about anything. They’re those type of rappers, Redman especially. If you didn’t see his freestyle series in 2023, find it and listen. Brother’s somehow sharper now than he was as a younger rapper. I love diversity among our sages because it inspires the newheads to keep pushing (and/or come harder with their own music).
What really sets this one off is Redman’s storytelling ability over those keys. The track would’ve been great without the storytelling (it’s a jazzy rap song where Redman raps and gives us bars). However, to tie the song together, the verses find him speaking on some wild situations he found himself in while trying to get cozy with his shawty. I love the vivid imagery, as it places listeners in the room and/or car with Red and his partner. We hear the love, we can imagine the conversations, we get high off the melody (if you catch my drift). The beat is pretty fire as well, because of the instruments used as well as the way it allows the hook to breathe. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms. If you like this one, be sure to be on the lookout for Potatohead People’s Eat Your Heart Out project, which seems to be a laundry list of wish fulfillment by the Canadian duo. And I, for one, am here for it.
