I love folks who can rap/sing and produce. They warm my heart, especially since I’m one of them and I like to see our type of creatives win. Now when you can, quite literally, be independent and do near everything on your own? That’s worth more than a warm heart. That’s worth dollars and makes sense.
Enter Dutch-Senegalese artist Kinck (pronounced like “kink”). In the midst of getting back into the swing of things, she hit my line with her latest track, “Honeypot.” She uses her experiences, both as an artist and as a biracial woman, to craft this. And let me tell you: the song reminds me of college. In a sense, “Honeypot” gives major M.I.A. and Rye Rye vibes. The track also allows her to combine playfulness, attentiveness, motivational lyrics and her ability to write a hit. It’s “girlbossy” while not getting hung up on terms that are overused to the point of ambiguity (another post for another day).
A cut from Kinck’s Most Wanted EP, “Honeypot” is a track, plain and simple, you should check out if you find yourself missing that 2007-2011/12 run of alternative hip-hop. It’s amazing that Baltimore Club Music has returned to the forefront of many sounds as quickly as it did. Now, don’t get me misconstrued: “Honeypot” isn’t 130 BPM nor full-on Baltimore club. It doesn’t have to be, specifically because the bass and thump are there. It’s a definite “play in the whip” type of track, one that makes you think as much as it makes you want to be “THAT [PERSON].”. If you need some extra boosts to get through the day/week/month, you know what to do.
