On “Matthew McConaughey,” the Gnarls Barkley-like Trvy and the Enemy burst onto the SOTB scene in a way that is grippy but not that type of “grippy.” The song is much more than just being alright alright alright. In fact, holds you and lets the energy get you in the mood to be in a good mood.
However, that’s not all that the song gives us. We also get a healthy load of funk-meets-rap. Trvy himself sounds like Ceelo flow-wise, which is always a good thing to hear. Ceelo is still one of my artistic faves. I love the instrumentation here, as it, in addition to GB, reminds me of the Prince and the NPG song “Gett Off.” No, the composition isn’t the same, nor is the subject matter (however hearing Prince seduce a thickums is a thing that needs to be heard). The way that the instruments reach a near-nirvana state and create great music that’s vibey but also has something profound and motivating to say.
When you take into consideration that Trvy won the Athens, GA Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year (an award also won by folks such as Linqua Franqa), nothing I said above is surprising. You don’t just win awards for half-baked lyrics and this one is fully baked–but not dazed and confused. All of these things make for a song that’ll have you bobbing, weaving and thinking about how wonky the world can get.
Check it out above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
