Teefa is a “Problem” for Feeble MCs

If I’m going to keep getting songs like this, you’ll see me writing until the cows come home to roost. Or something.

On “Problem,” artist Teefa puts the industry on notice and lets everyone know that she’s equal parts classy, intellectual and strong-willed. The song itself is grimy and has a 2000s NYC rap feel to it, specifically the beat. The bass thumps, while the boombap-like drums and the main melody allow for us to take in the lyrics like a fine wine. Why are they that divine? The lyrics dissect what people think of Teefa, her responses as well as how fans often view women in the rap game. It’s empowering without being preachy. It’s sexy without being (overly) sexual. It’s conscious but still hits like Mike Tyson in the 80s. Plus, it helps that Teefa’s flow is something like Rapsody meets Nicki, because I don’t think I could hear anyone else on this one.

Have I done enough to get you to peep?

If not, this is the type of hip-hop people always say “we need more of.” And even if there’s a bountiful amount in the underground or alternative scenes, putting it in the ears of the masses (through a bop) is smart marketing and smart music-making. Now I think I’ve done enough, so check out “Problem” (as well as Teefa’s 3 EP) and support dope music in all its forms.
