The first thing that perked me up when I got this one from artist and producer Cam Black is that his sound is reminiscent of Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick, Chris Brown, and D’Angelo among others. Me being curious, I gave his latest song, “Give Them Their Roses,” a spin at the best time for me to absorb music (I won’t tell you when it is, nor what I do). Long story short, his comparisons are adept. They’re so adept that I had to write about the song and tell whomever I could about it.
“Roses” is equal parts familial tribute and lesson to not take life for granted. You can hear the pain in Cam’s bars as he talks about his departed family members. You can also hear the proudness. I think that, for me, the song is very reminiscent of K.R.I.T.’s “The Vent.” As anyone who knows me knows, “The Vent” is my all-time favorite song (from any artist). Yes, after all I’ve heard, seen and experienced over the last 36 years of existence, my favorite song is a track from Return of 4eva. That’s obviously no slight to anyone else, but “if it don’t touch my soul, then I can’t listen to it.” Black’s song definitely touched my soul, specifically because there are a few people I would’ve liked to give a few more roses to before they were out of my life forever. That’s why I’m always quick to tell my people I love them and that I appreciate them–even if we butt heads the day or two before. You just don’t know what the future holds.
Check out this excellent song below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
