Over a G-Funk-like beat, Calgary-based rapper Jack Mills links up with the legendary Juvenile to craft a track for all the hustlers, dreamchasers and goal-seekers who walk their own path. The way that Mills slides over the beat, it’s a beautiful thing because it fits the G-Funk production, down to the voicebox elements. Juvie provides a sage-like hook and also effortlessly floats throughout the track. The way these two approached this track? It’s like it was made for me to hear this morning.
“The Pledge” is that type of song that feels like “Ten Crack Commandments” for the rise and grinders out there. Personally, I’m here for it. That’s especially because I’m back rejuvenated and ready to help artists and myself make our marks. It helps when the song in question has bars, a velvety flow and a throwback-but-modern instrumental. All in all, these sorts of tracks and some of my favorites. As someone who deals with mental health diagnoses (I think I’m going to stop saying “issues”), I sometimes lose sight of the important things. That’s, like I said during my post on Danny Copeland, because of intrusive thoughts that I’ve tried to brush off instead of straight-up confronting them and moving past them. This one was written for me, because it’s also helped me get my focus back.
