Nick Grant Dismissed His “FRIENEMIES” on New Track

Above, we’ve got the latest release from Nick Grant, the BJ the Chicago Kid-assisted track “FRIENEMIES.” In typical Grant fashion, the song is introspective as well as reflective. The bars here opt not to condemn, but to try to get to the root of the thoughts/decisions of ex-friends. Sometimes, it’s jealousy. Sometimes, it’s just that people don’t see eye to eye anymore. It happens; thus is the nature of humanity.

Even knowing and understanding that, we hear a man who also gets that some people aren’t meant to stick with you long-term. It’s a bittersweet moment, but one that adds even more weight to the overarching themes of “its “FRIENEMIES”‘s parent album, Sunday Dinner (specifically its Deluxe Edition). The project itself is, pardon my triteness, soul food for folks who’re still figuring out their new place in the world. That shows up in bunches here. Lyrically, Grant’s rhyme schemes are excellent, but take a backseat to the storytelling employed throughout the song. It’s less about the “#BARS!” and more about the why behind those bars. It reminds me of a KRIT or Scarface in its honesty. However, the track stands on its own too.

This one really spoke to me, since I’ve been taking inventory of some of the people in my life. I’ve had to cut some off, mainly because their energies were too contrast to mine. I don’t see the purpose of keeping people around who hate on my wins, even if your wins just piss them off even more. When that energy shifts, I move on and don’t look back. For example, I cut off someone I’d known for almost 20 years because of the way they carried themselves in a precarious situation. If something doesn’t serve me anymore, I get rid of it. If you feel like I do, even when it hurts to let folks go, this is for you. I recommend maintaining your peace, trimming off those who don’t vibe with your current self, checking this song and album out above and supporting dope music in all its forms.
