justJust Speaks on Love and Success with His “Fuchsia”-Tinted View

“Fuchsia” is a well-thought out discussion on romance and wins masquerading as a simple “hoes ain’t shit” ’90s rap homage. Let’s get that out the way here and now. The song is incredible and incredibly luscious and full-feeling in its commentary.

The song says “come for the boombap and ’90s references, stay for a young man’s views on love and success.” Just doesn’t outright say “money can improve your chances with the ladies,” but he doesn’t dismiss the notion either. The same thing applies for the concept of “talk yo’ crap, and then you clap” when it comes to sex. There’s a duality within this track that you wouldn’t normally get from a song of this kind. To me, the song shows a young man influenced by his surroundings–and how that’s shaped him over the years. And how, exactly, have those influences created the justJust we’ve got today?

It’s simple. He’s who he is because of a complicated love life–among other things. For example, he laughs at himself while also big upping himself. Just makes fun of ’90s absurdities while respecting them and the decade’s history. But let’s focus on love and success, as that is the song’s main focus. Love, for Just, is multifaceted but also very gray. It’s never cut and dry for him, just like it’s never cut and dry for anyone. You can love someone who’s not good for you. You can leave your “One” because they lacked one specific thing. You can be in love and be with someone who you’re not “officially dating.” When it comes to success, there’s that same sort of complication and duality. Just doesn’t really know what “successful” looks like, but he’s winning. He’s winning with life, but sometimes falters with love. Inversely, when his love/sex/”special friend” life goes well, there are less-than-ideal things popping up on the other side.

Again, this is a surprisingly deep song masquerading as just a ’90s homage. But, enough of me, [homie], now listen to Just–and support dope music in all its forms.
