Muri Crafts a Story of Finding Oneself on “Afternoon”

When pursuing your dreams, you sometimes have to take a leap of faith into the unknown. While these are somewhat cliched ways to look at it, cliches have a great deal of truth to them. In the case of Philippines-born, London-residing Muri, she left her home to begin her music career proper in Europe. In doing so, she gains success but also has to reconcile the fact that she also left another life behind.

We get a bit of that story on the amazingly-crafted “Afternoon.” However, the song itself isn’t doom and gloom. Sonically, we’re given a song that bounces equally between indie pop and neo-soul. Lyrically, we get something that speaks on finding the light in even the darkest corners of life. Muri could’ve said “F this” and continued wallowing in the differences between the Philippines and Europe. That, however, would’ve made things much more pessimistic. Thankfully, “Afternoon” focuses on the positives about the new experience and how a change of view can disassemble feelings of desolation. She works within the initial fears of moving to a new place and gives listeners an incredible look into someone who’s gone on a journey of self-discovery and self-rediscovery.

Co-penned with French producer Sacha Arnaud, “Afternoon” is equally confessional-while-being-vulnerable and powerful-while-being-inspirational. Check out the song below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
