Assumptions are often based in some sort of truth and the “angel and devil on my shoulder” cliche is no different. Intrusive thoughts do exist–but they’re scarier than any cartoon demon. Intrusive thoughts are, as I understand them, somewhat irrational self-doubts and concerns that especially inflict their damage on those of us who are anxious by design (and/or deal with other mental health concerns). I combat these thoughts part of my own mental health. And while I can often confront them and recenter myself, the intrusive thoughts do win every so often.
“Listening To,” the latest song from UK artist Christopha, finds the rhymesayer battling that devil and coming out on top. In doing so, we both get a new look at Christopha as a person–and get to hear new bars. We see an artist who isn’t afraid to let listeners see them vulnerable. That allows for the overall message of confronting the devil and ignoring its intrusiveness hit that much harder. Overall, the sound of the track is a bit laidback, which allows for the bars to cut through that much deeper.
If you need a reminder to keep the devil off–and/or avoid letting those intrusive thoughts take you under–check this out above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
