I often talk about beats “switching up” and being “dynamic” when I post songs, both from myself (at times) and others. For those who may not know what I mean and just think that I’m saying things just to say “no” to a song, here’s an example: Na$ty Nij’s “BIRDBOX.” Throughout the track, the melody shifts as the emotions do and the flows do. Each part of the track feels like a different adventure, albeit one that still ties into an overarching theme.
The overarching themes here are growth, grinding, and gathering like minds to get rid of foolishness and ignorance. Displayed through a combination of Griselda-esque flows and beats with Kendrick-esque storytelling, “BIRDBOX” is a helluva track. Unlike pharmaceutical commercials using the melodies of 2000s pop songs, everything here feels fresh and organic. Lyrically, Nij also goes into the risks of putting yourself out there to people who don’t have your best interested in mind. He also speaks on the issues facing Black men who aren’t honest with themselves emotionally and mentally. All of this within 2:19.
