And now, time for something a little bit different. SOTB loves dope music in all its forms, but I do love me some good pop every so often with my boombap, my city pop and my ’70s-’90s R&B/funk/soul. After all, going to a diverse school for middle school and being in one of those gifted and talented programs? In addition to introducing me to nonblack people on a regular basis (more on that at a later date), it opened my ears to a lot of sounds. I cut my teeth supporting dope music in all its forms as a chubby middle schooler. I mean, it’s no secret what I’m talking about; if you know me even a little, you know where and what I mean.
I say all that to introduce Baltimore-born/Nashville-residing pop rock group The Hollow Party’s new song, “Throw It Out the Window.” I got this song in my inbox a little while ago and here’re my thoughts on why you may have to add this one into your rotations. And you should add it to your rotations. “Throw It Out the Window,” from the first seconds in, reminds me of a Panic! at the Disco album cut, circa Death of a Bachelor. It’s not really a love song, but it’s not exactly a track about a lost love, either. Instead, the track kind of examines all sides of the story’s romance. The song begs the question: “how much is too much before we walk away from each other.” How this one also reminds me of a Death of a Bachelor-era Panic! cut is the utilization of multipart harmonies throughout the song, which makes the pleas for clarity sound that much richer and (and this is a good thing here) desperate. If you need a song that equally questions “should we stay” and “should we just call it,” this one should be for you.
But…if you need multilayered harmonies that, like me, take your Millennial Mind to a slightly simpler time, check it out and support dope music in all its forms.
