Even with all the planning you can muster, there are still times where you’ll end up back at Square One. It happens and there’s no real shame in it happening. What one does during a reset will dictate the course of their future. Do you accept the familiarity to recenter and recollect yourself…or do you crash out because you wanted things to go differently? Personally, I’d take comfort at restarting. For me, it’d just mean my original plan wasn’t the one God had working for me.
On Sargeant X Comrade’s latest, “Old Familiar Feelin’,” the Canadian duo of vocalist Yolanda Sargeant and her “Comrade” (aka producer and instrumentalist Evgeniy) provide calm. Vocally, we’re given a ride that’s reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Erykah Badu. The instrumentation is pensive but also freeing, almost as if that cliched weight was lifted by a quick reset. This “Lo-Fi Soul” cut is one that wraps you up in a big blanket of peace to implore you to reset and restart. If one is to follow the directives put in place here, I think that starting over won’t be such a big deal.
Granted, there is also a sense of regret that wafts throughout the song, like smoke in a dimly-lit lounge. That duality is what initially brought me to “Feelin,'” as it’s just simple human nature. It really goes back to my initial question: do you recenter and recollect or do you crash out? Thankfully, SXC opt to recollect over a lush medley of sounds. If you’re intrigued, or even just want to stop and take a second, this one is yours to treasure. Check it out below and support dope music in all its forms.
