From the jump, I enjoyed “Song 4 Grandma” because of a “Bag Lady” flip that reminds me of Blu and Exile’s title track from Below the Heavens. The livication-steeped song finds Spec Kay and Dubbisdope speaking on the importance their grandmother has in their lives. On top of that, they let us know that their grandmother shines a beacon of light onto anyone she meets. This is done both through the bars (Spec Kay) and the beat (Dubbisdope), which complement each other nicely. The song hits a bit close to home as well. Specifically, their grandma, who per Spec via IG recently turned 89, reminds me of my own mother. Add all those things up and you’ve got a track that I just had to write about.
Lyrically, Spec Kay brings to mind Chance the Rapper and the aforementioned Blu here. The wordsmith provides a somewhat conversational flow with multisyllabic rhymes and heartfelt lyrics about the things their grandma instilled in everyone around her. Overall, we get an honest song that illustrates just who Spec and Dubb’s grandma is. Where this one also shines is its blend of those homages with and a look inside what Spec and Dubb’s upbringing looked like from a cultural standpoint. It’s an incredible track, one that’ll have you misty-eyed as well as reaching out to the fam you grew up with/because of. Plus, the brother can spit and Dubb’s beat takes many pieces of “Bag Lady” outside of the main melody. That’s what helps the beat feel even more alive. Check out the song below and remember to pay homage to those who made you great. Oh, and support dope music in all its forms.
